Joel's design journey reflects a deep commitment to creating spaces that are both beautiful and functional, blending traditional foundations with subtle modern touches. His journey began at LSU, where his studies in landscape architecture ultimately evolved into a passion for interior design. It was through a pivotal meeting with Dixon Smith that Joel was able to immerse himself in the world of interior design. Under Dixon's guidance and inspired by design legends like Sister Parrish and Albert Hadley, Joel’s career took flight and has since spanned decades.

With a design philosophy grounded in quality, comfort, and style, Joel emphasizes investing in fine fabrics and durable pieces, focusing on long-lasting elements rather than chasing fleeting trends. His approach merges classic elements with contemporary influences, creating balanced and timeless spaces. One area he particularly enjoys working on is the master bedroom, where he finds joy in helping clients create a sanctuary—an oasis that offers rest and respite from the pressures of daily life.

Joel’s favorite part of any project is the final staging, where he can see the full transformation unfold. He loves witnessing clients' spontaneous reactions as they experience the space for the first time, knowing that each thoughtful detail has come together to craft a truly personalized and harmonious environment.

Showroom Location

Located at 1655 Lobdell Ave in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, our historical A. Hays Town designed showroom is 10,000 square feet of home heaven.

Most of my design work is done through our showroom - which is open to the public. Our design center holds thousands of fabric samples, vendors from all over the word and items from those vendors - so you can sit and try the items presented. If you’d like to stop in, the showroom and design center are open to the public - no appointment needed!

 FAQs

  • I do not charge design fees if you are purchasing furnishing and other items through Dixon Smith Interiors. If you need assistance with new construction or a renovation that does not involve a purchase through DSI, I charge an hourly design fee of $125 per hour. This usually means time spent making finishing selections such as: hardware, tile selection, slab selections, and more.

  • My design work is based out of Dixon Smith Interiors, a beautiful design showroom and store that my grandmother, Dixon Smith, started in the 1950’s. DSI has a design showroom with thousands of samples and hundreds of vendors to work with. Most of the time, a project can easily be completed through DSI. But frequently a project may call for a unique or one-of-a-kind piece from some else - no problem! Not everything has to come from Dixon Smith Interiors. Often, my projects involve mixing items from our Shop with items you already have, online vendors and other local stores.

  • Yes, of course! Our Shop is open to the public - an appointment with me or any other of our designers isn’t needed. DSI is open Monday through Friday 10am to 4pm. Special appointment times can be made outside of these hours.

  • If you would like to meet with me, I am happy to do so! Typically, I like to meet either at the client’s house for the first time or in our Shop location. That way, we can talk about the project, discuss what is needed and how I can assist in whatever you are trying to achieve.   • I help with all aspects of a project. From house plan reviews to meeting with your contractor to discussing paint colors, I can assist you with anything you need help with. I here so you don’t have to complete your project alone!

  • Our Design Studio focuses on offering selections for everything you can do within your space. Find the perfect wallpaper, carpet, drapery material, bedding and more. Our Design Studio also highlights all of our manufacturers’ in-line offerings. Plus, find original art, accessories and lighting throughout the showroom.
